With greater emphasis on emerging wideband standards to handle both voice and data traffic, wireless systems require high speed A/D and D/A converters operating at rates of 100 MHz and beyond. New algorithms to optimize signal-to-noise performance and reduce bit error rates are often best implemented in FPGAs (field programmable gate arrays). High channel density digital receivers with fast tuning and programmable bandwidths can accommodate multiple standards using the same hardware platforms. DSP tasks can usually be handled with fixed point processors, although next generation R&D efforts can benefit from easier-to-use floating point platforms.
